JIAMUPACKING cares about reducing environmental impact through the use of EVOHresins. EVOH (also known as EVAL) is an Ethylene-Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer mainly composed of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen. The content of ethylene (mole fraction) in EVOH is usually 20% ~ 45%, and the content of ethylenol 55% ~ 80%. EVOH is known as the "three large barrier resin" in the world with polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) and polyamide (PA).

It has no toxic gases when burned, and its combustion heat is only half that of polyethylene, causing little harm to the environment. It is a crystalline polymer that has a molecular structure represented by the following formula:

In the 1950s, E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company successfully industrialized EVOH by copolymerization of ethylene and vinyl acetate to produce EVOH. In the year of 1972, the Japanese Kuraray company successfully industrialized EVOH. There are only three companies in the world producing EVOH resin. The two largest companies are the Kuraray and the Japanese synthetic chemical industry company.

1. Sophisticated technology allows us to manufacture food trays & containers without using environmentally harmful PVDC. EVOH, an environmentally friendly substance, is used as a barrier plastic. Unlike PVDC, EVOH does not contain chlorine, dioxins, metals or other elements that may cause endocrinological disorders.

2. Due to exceptional barrier properties, EVOH resins has a 10.000 times greater gas barrier than standard LDPE film. A thin EVOH layer gives a powerful and effective barrier against gases, hence preserving food freshness. As an end effect, our lightweight packaging helps reduce waste.

3. Providing a valuable barrier function with just a few microns, EVOH allow us to reduce the amount of raw material helping us to preserve natural resources.

EVOH Layer Advantages

 Excellent barrier against oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and helium: EVOH extends the shelf life of food products and protects their nutrients against bacteria.

 Packaged products stay fresh all the way through the supply chain and even when stored for extended periods of time. EVOH reduces the need for preservatives or even avoids them entirely.

 The taste, scent, color and freshness of all packaged products remain intact. EVOH increases the visual appeal of products for consumers.

 Excellent transparency and high gloss: EVOH helps attract the shoppers' attention, making the product look even better.

 EVOH is recyclable and environmentally safe.

 PP-EVOH-PE is a material with outstanding barrier properties in relation to the MAP packaging of fresh meat, poultry and fish. Even when contaminated, the material has good sealing properties, and can be sealed with a wide range of common sealing films from various manufacturers.

 Thanks to the material’s high barrier, temperature and sealing properties, the trays are also ideal for the skin packaging of all meat types and seafood where a longer shelf-life is desired than can be achieved with MAP packaging. Skin packaging also means the trays are suitable for displaying upright in the store.

 The material can withstand temperatures ranging from -20˚C to 100˚C, so it can be taken directly from the freezer and placed in the microwave. PP-EVOH-PE is available in clear as well as a wide range of colours.

EVOH Layer Performance

The properties of EVOH are highly crystalline, and their properties mainly depend on the mole fraction of two kinds of comonomers. Its gas resistance, moisture resistance and processing performance change with the change of ethylene content. When the ethylene content increases, the gas barrier decreases, the moisture resistance improves, and the resin is easier to process. While the ethylene content is more than 50%, the gas resistance will be seriously damaged, so the ethylene content in EVOH is generally kept between 20% ~ 45%. In addition, the gas resistance decreases with the increase of temperature, for example, when the temperature increases from 20˚C to 35˚C, the oxygen transmittance increases by more than three times. EVOH also has high strength, elasticity, surface hardness and wear resistance. It is characterized by excellent gas barrier and processability, as well as excellent features in transparency, glossiness, mechanical strength, scalability, abrasion performance, cold resistance and surface strength.

  • Gas barrier property: the most prominent feature of EVOH resin is its high gas barrier, which can effectively prevent the penetration of oxygen, CO and other gases.

  • Oil & organic solvent resistance: EVOH resin has strong oil & organic solvent resistance.

  • Thermal-shock resistance: EVOH resin is a kind of high resistance resin with good thermal stability. It can not only use the waste produced in the process of production, but also recycle the packaging material after it has been used.

  • Wholesomeness: Because EVOH does not use plasticizers, it is non-toxic and tasteless. It complies with the European Community Food Packaging Regulations and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations. It can be in contact with foods (such as meat poultry) or pharmaceuticals. EVOH is a kind of environmentally friendly material after it burns and does not produce harmful gases. In Europe, America and Japan, the trend of replacing PVDC is becoming more and more obvious.

  • Hygroscopicity: Because of the hydroxy in the molecular structure of EVOH resin, it has hydrophilic and hygroscopicity. When moisture is adsorbed, the barrier performance of the gas will be affected. At a relative humidity less than 20%, a water molecule is difficult to effect hydroxyl groups of the EVOH, small amount of moisture. However, when the relative humidity is greater than 30%, the water molecules act on the hydroxyl groups in the EVOH, and the moisture absorption is increased. In order to prevent this, a multilayer structure such as a moisture-resistant resin such as polyolefin may be used to coat the EVOH resin layer to obtain an ideal packaging material.

  • Weather resisting property: EVOH has excellent weather resistance and maintains its original luster even when used outdoors for a long time without turning yellow.

  • Processability: Due to the introduction of vinyl, EVOH can be thermoformed using conventional polyolefin processing equipment.

  • Printability: EVOH has hydroxyl groups, so its surface can be printed with beautiful patterns and text without treatment.

  • Transparency and luster: EVOH is transparent, and when used as the outer surface layer of packaging materials, it exhibits a high flash and low haze appearance.

Areas of application

Textile material:
EVOH resin is suitable for hot-melt bonding and coating of various fiber fabrics, and is particularly suitable for garment manufacturing because of its superior bonding property and water-washing resistance to fibers.

Medical materials:

Medical permeable membranes can be made from EVOH resin and sterilized by radiation treatment.

Structural material:

EVOH blended with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) to manufacture automotive fuel tanks or linings, air-conditioning equipment components, because EV0H structural components can reduce leakage of gasoline or freon, while HDPE / EVOH fuel tanks are more traditional than traditional metal fuel tanks Lighter and more economical.

Packaging material

EVOH resin has been widely used in packaging & printing industry because of its excellent barrier property. It can significantly extend the storage time of food, so can be used to pack ketchup, sugar juice, dairy products, meat products, vegetables and juices, beverages, etc. In addition, EVOH resin can also be used in non-food packaging, such as chemicals, solvents, health products, pharmaceutical products, cosmetics and electronic products. The wrapping paper and EVOH copolymer can be combined to form a high gas barrier material and applied to food preservation packaging.
